Providers used to be responsible for reporting to the Health Care Integrity and Protection Data Bank (HIPDB) and the National Practitioners' Data Bank (NPDB), but this duplication was eliminated through Section 6403 of the Affordable Care Act. The HIPDB officially became part of the NPDB on May 6, 2013.
Federal statutes require that certain entities report actions to the NPDB. The NPDB was created by Congress to improve health care quality, protect the public, and reduce health care fraud and abuse. The NPDB collects and shares information about practitioners’ professional credentials to authorized users.
