Redetermination is the initial level of appeal when you have received a Medicare overpayment demand based on ZPIC, PSC or RAC audit results. Under Medicare rules, you have 120 days to file your appeal after you receive a demand letter from a Medicare Administrative Contractor. However, to avoid recoupment (Medicare withholding future payments and applying them to an alleged debt), you must file an appeal within 30 days of receiving a demand letter. This is a very short deadline, and you should act quickly to effectively appeal an adverse initial determination.
